Refined carbohydrates are addicting and delicious, but they’re the bane of any good diet plan. These types of carbs, which are mainly found in potato chips, white breads, and all sorts of other processed foods, provide absolutely no nutrition and always lead to visceral fat. Visceral fat is the belly fat that develops as a result of too much sugar (and therefore insulin) in the bloodstream. Dr. Hector Perez, MD, health expert and board-certified chief surgeon at Bariatric Journal, says that the biggest problem with refined carbs are that they’re easy to overeat.
“They’re a significant contributor to visceral fat,” Perez says. “You might not even realize that you’re eating too much of them.”
A total lack of nutritional value leads to brain fog and sluggishness later in the day, which the body interprets as a need for more sugar to convert into energy. So not only have you wrecked your energy levels by eating refined carbs, but you’ve set yourself up for more empty snacking later, as well.
You can see how this lifestyle becomes a vicious cycle, and how visceral fat is all but guaranteed once the cycle begins.
“Besides potato chips, white bread, fried potatoes, white rice, pancakes, doughnuts, and cakes also qualify as refined carbs” Perez warns. He adds that “breakfast foods, pastries, and fast food also have a high level of refined carbs, and are ones to watch out for first when reevaluating your diet, especially if your goal is to eat healthier.”

If you absolutely must eat refined carbs, then put a small amount on a plate and limit your consumption to that portion. Don’t prop the bag up next to yourself and casually grab for more. As blood sugar levels spike, fullness will only last momentarily. In other words, you could easily eat your entire day’s worth of calories in the form of refined carbs and not even feel satisfied or satiated.
Simply put: refined carbs are utterly worthless besides a small treat during special occasions. What’s worse is that many families put refined carbs on the table in the morning, not knowing that they’re basically eating Doritos for breakfast.
“Eating refined carbs for breakfast is a surefire way to pack on the pounds over time,” Perez says. “Choose a breakfast that contains whole grains, protein, and healthy fats. This combination will help keep you full throughout the morning, and can help stave off cravings later in the day.”
Instead of cereal or processed treats like muffins and danishes, eat whole foods for breakfast. Perez says “oatmeal with nuts and berries, eggs with avocado, or a smoothie made with Greek yogurt, almond milk, and spinach are all great choices.” And if you can make those small changes, the visceral fat that has already accumulated with slowly disappear, as well.
