Chicago Med star Marlyne Barrett recently revealed she’s been battling uterine and ovarian cancer since July of this year. Barrett, 44, said her doctors discovered a tumor on her uterus and ovary; ironically, her character Maggie Lockwood battled breast cancer on the show in past seasons.
Barrett called herself an “extremely private person” but said that she “felt a responsibility to tell my story.” And her character’s dramatized fight on Chicago Med actually helped her prepare for the real moment of diagnosis in her own life.
“When my character went through breast cancer, I had a sea of people reach out to me through social media,” she recalled. “They brought me courage, and so I felt a sense of inevitability to meet their hearts where they met me.”
The New York native — who shares baby twins with her husband, pastor Gavin Barrett — called the diagnosis a “shock to [her] womanhood.”
“The initial experience was a shock, a shock to my womanhood,” she said. “I didn’t believe them, but when they showed me the CT scan, I went, ‘Oh, my word.’ The first questions were, ‘Am I going to live?’ I just fell into my husband’s arms. It still takes my breath away when I think about it.”

The cancer required “aggressive” chemotherapy and an eventual hysterectomy.
“The best way I could experience was to meet it,” she said. “There’s no running from it because it’s my life. And eventually, you just surrender because it’s so much bigger than anything you’ve ever faced. I found this courage and I just hunkered down and said, ‘I’m going to face this.’”
Barrett also gushed over her workplace family, saying that the entire show team has been so supportive.
“I’ve had people shave their heads on set to support me,” the actress said of the cast and crew while fighting back tears. “The work has brought me a lot of joy right now.”
Barrett, who gained fame as a cast member on HBO’s hit series The Wire, is an original Chicago Med cast member, having played the role of Maggie for eight seasons.
Ovarian cancer is a growth of cells that forms in the ovaries. The cells multiply quickly and can invade and destroy healthy body tissue. The majority of ovarian tumors are benign (noncancerous); but doctors may choose to treat benign ovarian tumors by completely removing the ovary or by removing the part of the ovary containing the tumor.
