Marjorie Taylor Greene Blames Tampon Shortage On Transgender People

Congressional Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene oddly blames a current tampon shortage on transgender people. While speaking to Right Side Broadcasting Network, Greene said the shortage is “probably because men are buying tampons… I’m telling you the truth. You can look it up. Look it up on the internet. Everything’s true on the internet.”

Oof.

Conversely, tampon manufacturers and consulting firms attribute the tampon shortage to COVID-19 related supply shortages. The shortages compound a pre-pandemic issue of importing the raw materials (mostly cotton and rayon) needed to manufacture tampons. No one with actual knowledge into the tampon shortage has mentioned transgender people.

Proctor & Gamble told Al Jazeera that the shortage is “a temporary situation.” The Tampax manufacturer elaborates that their team is “producing tampons 24/7 to meet the increased demand for our products,” and that they “are working with [their] US retail partners to maximize availability, which has significantly increased over the last several months.”

Edgewell, the manufacturer for Playtex, Carefree, and Stayfree, specifically blames workforce shortages due to Omicron. They vow similar efforts to get tampons and feminine products back on store shelves, according to Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, pharmacies and major retailers are making similar statements and gripes, citing the same kinds of issues that have caused baby formula shortages.

But none of that really matters. Because apparently, if you look somewhere on the internet, you will find all sorts of apophenic answers to your questions. Just ask Congresswoman Greene.

Greene somehow also connects the baby formula shortages to the border, although it’s unclear if she’s referencing immigration in any way. She asks if anyone’s “checked the warehouses at the border where all the baby formula is stocked.”

Just to be clear, the baby formula isn’t being stocked and held indefinitely at mysterious border warehouses. We’re still very much in the midst of a pandemic, with almost half a million new cases reported on June 17. It’s not transgender people causing the tampon shortage.
