Friday. Does anyone remember when Flintstone vitamins were a thing? Arethey still a thing? According to a quick google search they are indeed still athing, and are sold by none other than Bayer–the same company that sellsRoundUp (glyphosate), the widely used herbicide linked to an increased risk ofcancer. Maybe Bayer Flintstone vitamins aren’t the best place to get yourmicronutrients. What are micronutrients anyway? Let’s dive in.

Macros and Micros.

Ok, ok–the last thing you want to do on a Friday is go through a boringnutrition lesson, so we’ll keep this brief. This stuff is important, but itdoesn’t have to be complicated. You hear about macronutrients all the time.Protein, fat, and carbohydrates tend to dominate the popular conversationaround weight loss, dieting, metabolic health, and blood glucose spikes. Lowfat this, low carb that, keto, carnivore, high protein, IIFYM, yada yada. These three nutrients are called macronutrients because they are nutrientsthat you need in large amounts. They are an important piece of conversationwhen looking to optimize diet for health, but there is another important pieceas well. Enter the micros. Conversely, these are nutrients you need in muchsmaller amounts, but their importance and the impact they have on our healthis anything but small. Micronutrients include vitamins, minerals, traceminerals, and antioxidants. Optimal micronutrient intake is crucial if youwant your body to perform at top notch all the way down to the cellular level.Among all the many essential bodily functions that depend on micronutrients tofunction properly, immune health is one that is relevant today more than ever. Theproblem with getting all the necessary micronutrients is that the nutritionalcontent of our foods will vary greatly depending on when and where they aregrown and nutritional content of the soil. This can make it difficult to getsome micronutrients compared to others, which is where supplementation mightcome in handy, as long as it is not in the way of Flintstone or gummyvitamins. The solution? Vitamin D, magnesium, selenium, zinc, omega-3 fattyacids, B12, lipoic acid, manganese are eight micronutrients that are essentialand a great starting point if you are looking to prioritize plugging anymicronutrients holes you may have in your diet. Take a deep dive into each ofthese micronutrients, where you can get more of them in your diet, and howmuch you need with this helpful blogpiece! Andif you don’t have time to deep dive, simply eating a wide variety of colorfulproduce, grass fed or pasture raised animal products, the occasional organmeat, and spending plenty of time outside in the sun should cover most (if notall) your micronutrient needs.

Speaking Of Bayer, Monsanto, and Glyphosate

No one wants our sh*tty, GMO, pesticide laden corn. To quickly provide somebackground here–Bayer is a giant company that, aside from making Flintstonevitamins, also owns Monsanto. Monsanto makes the widely used herbicide,RoundUp. The main ingredient in RoundUp is glyphosate, which has been shown toincrease risk of cancer. So basically Bayer, Monsanto, and glyphosate allsuck. Mexican president Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador signed a decree that willphase out Mexican imports of U.S grown GMO & glyphosate laden corn by2024. Mexiconow purchases 25 percent of American corn exports, amounting to more than $2.7billion annually. The country hopes that this phase out will not only keepthis unhealthy junk corn out of their country, but also boost local farmers asthey can now grow and sell their products domestically, without the influx ofcheap, U.S corn flooding the market. Well done, Mexico. Maybe we can followsuit and start curbing our own use of GMO crops back home. Wouldn’t that benice?
