Tuesday. Remember when “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” was touted as ahealthier alternative to real butter? If you don’t remember, here is anabsolutely ridiculous commercial from 1996 starring Fabio. Luckily, we now knowbetter–vegetable oil based margarine is terrible for our health. Today, thereis a new dairy alternative that is being touted as a healthier and more eco-friendly solution–plant based milks. So what gives? Is [insert any nut orgrain] milk the solution to all our problems or is this just the margarine ofour generation? Let’s dive in.
Soaked Grain Water Sucks
Oatly gets a lot of (not very positive) coverage on The Daily Tonic, but it isfor good reason. As the only plant-based milk alternative brand to run a SuperBowl ad or sign a nationwide deal with Starbucks, this behemoth brand is theepitome of everything that is wrong with plant-based milks. Oatly is oilygrain water that has the glycemic load of a can of Coke, and a similar amountof industrial seed oil (canola) as a medium serving of French Fries. We’ll dive furtherinto glycemic load on a future issue, but for now, that just means thatOatly’s impact on blood sugar is similar to that of a can of soda. Not good.But Oatly isn’t the only plant-based milk alternative out there. Surely theycan’t all be as bad. Well, we can’t go through each and every brand here butjust keep this in mind–if an industrial seed oil is added to make [insert anynut or grain] milk creamier, drop the carton and run for the hills. Andyes–most brands end up adding these industrial seed oils because they arecheap and because without them, their grain/nut waters would taste just likegrain/nut water, as opposed to anything even remotely resembling milk. Alsokeep in mind that a lot of soybeans and oats used for these products areimported from around the world, where heavy chemical spraying is the norm.Nothing like a little pesticide residue to spice up that oat milk latte. Butwhat about the environment? Well, a single glass of almond milk requires 130pints of water to produce. Most of those almonds are grown in the Central Valleyin California. Guess what region of the country is experiencing a devastatingdrought that is destroying ecosystems and killing off bee populations? TheCentral Valley in California. But what about the methane coming from hugedairy operations? Aren’t plant-based alternatives a good eco-friendliersolution when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions. Well, according to thisreport putout by a team of researchers from Virginia Tech and the U.S Department ofAgriculture, if we were to snap our fingers Thanos style and get rid of everysingle dairy cow in the U.S, total greenhouse gas emissions would decrease bya mere 0.7 percent. Combine that with the fact that regenerative dairy farmslike Alexandre Family Farm are actually building soil and restoring ecosystems,and the blanket statement that all dairy is bad quickly falls apart. Now ofcourse some people just don’t handle dairy well. Milk isn’t a mandatory pieceof a healthy diet. But if you are going to pay the extra $1.25 to make yourlatte an oat milk latte, make sure you really understand why you are makingthe substitution. It isn’t because it is healthier and it isn’t because it isbetter for the environment.
